Baptism Preparation Program
The Holy Cross AFC Parishes prepare together for baptism. The office is at Cathedral Parish 605 North State St., New Ulm, MN 56073. Contact:  (507) 233-0628 or faithformation@holycrossafc.org.

The Sacrament of Baptism is the first sacrament to be received and must precede all others. It is the Sacrament that washes away Original Sin and makes us children of God. Through the waters of Baptism, we die to our sinfulness and are reborn into the life of Christ. We are anointed with Chrism to become Christ-like; we put on the white garment of purity and accept the light of Christ in the Baptism candle. Through this Sacrament, we receive an indelible mark on our soul that can never be removed.

•Baptism: The required parent preparation class is held by appointment, in the Cathedral Parish basement, Leifeld Hall. Call (507) 233-0628 or email faithformation@holycrossafc.org to register. Class must be repeated if 3 or more years have passed since your last child was baptized.

•Scheduling a Baptism - the following are the regular times for each Parish:
  • Baptisms at the Cathedral are after the Sunday 10:00 am Mass or after the 5:00 pm Saturday Mass.
  • Baptisms at St. Mary's are after the 5:30 pm Mass on Saturday.
  • Baptisms at St. John's are during or after the 10:30 am Mass on Sunday's
  • Baptisms at St. George are during the 8:30 am Mass on Sunday's.
Other times may be scheduled at any of the Parishes if a priest or deacon is available.

•Godparents: The Catholic Church asks the parents to select Godparents. They are present to represent the entire Catholic Faith Community. They express their readiness to assist the parents in their duty as Christian mothers and fathers.

Godparents need to be practicing members of a Catholic Parish (weekend Mass attendance assumed) in good standing with the church and leading lives in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken as godparents. And if married, prepared through the Catholic Church.

Only one godparent is necessary and the person must be a Confirmed, practicing Catholic, 16 years or older. If a second godparent is desired, they should be of the opposite sex and a Confirmed, practicing Catholic, 16 years or older.

A Baptized Christian from another faith may serve as the second godparent as a Christian witness, and needs to be a Confirmed, practicing member of their Christian faith, 16 years or older.
